With the busy holiday season officially behind us, a lot of people are settling back into their regular routines — which, ideally, includes carving out some time to relax with a good book. If you read on a Kindle or use the Kindle app, there’s some good news: Amazon Prime members can often snag those reads for free.
How, you may ask? Well, at the start of every month, Amazon gives Prime members free Kindle e-books through its First Reads program. The service features a curated selection of new Kindle e-books across multiple genres, with refreshed offerings on the first of each month. This January, Prime members can claim two free Kindle books from the First Reads lineup, which they get to keep forever.
The biggest caveat is that you need to be an Amazon Prime member to snag the free books, which costs $15 a month or $139 annually. That said, if you’ve never tried Prime before, or you’re a former subscriber, you may be eligible for a free trial. That allows you to test the service, with the two biggest perks being fast, free shipping and Prime Video, and also claim the free Kindle books through First Reads this month. You can check out the First Reads program and Amazon Prime below.

To kick off the new year, Amazon is offering not one but two free Kindle e-books in January. The First Reads program features a variety of books across genres, with this month’s offerings totaling 10 titles. Some of this month’s options include historical fiction, fantasy, and romance titles.
Here are all the Kindle books available through Amazon’s First Reads program for January:
- Famous Once: A Short Story (Genre: Women’s Fiction)
- Read Between the Lies: A Novel (Genre: Suspense)
- Land of Dreams (Genre: Historical Fiction)
- In His Wake (Genre: Thriller)
- The Epicenter of Forever (Genre: Women’s Fiction)
- The People’s Library (Genre: Fantasy)
- Hooked: A Thriller (Genre: Mystery)
- Soft Launch (Genre: Coming of Age)
- Blade (Genre: Psychological Thriller)
- The Secrets Below (Genre: Middle Grade Fiction)
A reminder, out of the 10 books listed above, Prime members can choose two to get for free. If you want more than that, you’ll need to pay for the extras. To claim your free picks, head to Amazon’s First Reads page, select the title you want, and click the “Read now for $0.00” button on the right-hand side of the book’s store page. The book will then be added to your Kindle library, where you can download it to your Kindle e-reader or read it in the mobile app.
If you’re not a Prime member, you can still browse the First Reads selection — you’ll just need to pay $2 per book instead of getting them for free, which honestly still isn’t a bad deal.
All in all, if you’re a Prime member and an avid Kindle reader, I highly recommend checking out Amazon’s First Reads program. It’s an often-overlooked benefit of Prime and an easy way to grow your Kindle library without spending more money. Plus, it only takes a few clicks.
