CES 2026: Sony And Honda Hint At Larger Afeela Electric SUV

Sony Honda Mobility used CES 2026 to tease a second electric vehicle under its Afeela brand, signaling plans to expand beyond the upcoming Afeela 1 sedan. While customer deliveries of the Afeela 1 are scheduled to begin later in 2026, the company revealed that it’s already working on a larger all-electric SUV targeted at a wider range of users. A planned launch as early as 2028 in the United States.

The companies showed what they called a pre-production version of the Afeela 1, which looks very much like the production vehicles that are priced at $102,900 for the Signature model. A lower-priced Origin version, starting at $89,900, will supposedly follow in 2027. Though the sedan has not yet reached customers, the just-teased SUV is positioned as offering more interior space, flexibility, and accessibility while sharing the same technical base as the Afeela 1.

It will also likely boast Sony Honda Mobility’s Personal Agent, an AI concierge that leverages Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service for natural voice interaction, and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis, which the company touts supports AI-centric mobility experiences. Gaming with a PlayStation 5 integrated into the car’s infotainment system remains a clearly emphasized feature. Visually, the SUV takes on a similar look to the sedan but with a taller ride height, while it most certainly will share the identical sensor suite that enables advanced driver assistance along with future autonomous functionality.

Sony Honda Mobility has outlined Level 4–equivalent autonomous driving for the “driverless” environment that places a focus on entertainment and in-car experiences as its long-term objective. Competition is growing, however, especially from Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi and Huawei, which have already launched multiple domestic advanced EVs.

Concerns remain around pricing and value. With a range of up to 300 miles (482.8 kilometers), the Afeela 1 is significantly pricier than competitors like BMW’s upcoming iX3, which is expected to offer greater range at a lower price. As a result, Sony Honda Mobility may need more than digital features and entertainment integrations to justify its premium positioning.
